The facts about much of his childhood are unknown. Both of his parents were part of the armed forces and were stationed at Pearl Harbor. His brother, a genius prodigy, was off in mainland America when Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese, which resulted in Nathan being his sole remaining family member. Driven by rage, Snake trained himself physically for half a year before faking his age and joining the armed forces.
Thanks to his size, Snake never really looked his age, and he never acted his age. One woman was able to see through his deception though, and everyone seemed to call her "The Boss." Seeing the potential, she took Snake under her wing, training him as a member of her Cobra Unit, and earning him the nickname The Son in the process. The entirety of the Cobra Unit were used as test subjects for the experimental Super Soldier Serum prior to Steve Rogers. When government matters couldn't be handled and the X-Men stepped in, Snake often provided them with information and equipment to aid them through their battles. After the Stanford Incident and Superhuman Registration sparked a Civil War among the hero community, Snake, despite being under government contract, secretly aided resistance forces by freeing imprisoned heroes and taking out government outposts. He has since linked up with Captain America, his Underground Avengers, and the X-Men. He disappeared during the Civil War with his nephew, Raiden, in order to search for his brother and his Weapon Plus captives.
He, Raiden, and Ein Hayabusa wandered the world for a time, popping up in hot zones around the world, hunting down Nathan and his Weapon Plus forces. Along the way, the trio managed to destroy a number of Weapon Plus facilities around the world. Their travels lead them to Europe where they coincidentally met up with the X-Men and aided them in defeating Albion and his forces before being quickly tossed in a battle for the Mutant Messiah named Hope. Weapon Plus held an interest in the girl, which quickly put Snake into conflict with his brother and the captured X-Men. They were able to not only rescue the X-Men, but also save Hope.
